How we adapt to stress and anxiety can be described using two terms – Allostasis, and Allostatic load, or overload.

Allostasis, is the process of maintaining balance and stability (homeostasis) by actively suppressing stress hormones or other mediators. Allostatic load or overload refers to the damage caused, or we can refer to it as the wear and tear on the body and brain as a result of constantly maintaining balance or allostasis.

The brain is not only involved in modulating the level of pain we experience but it is also responsible for interpreting experiences as either threatening or nonthreatening, followed by determining the appropriate course of action, which can be behavioral and/or physiological.
